It is as you say, really the best solution for. I bit the bullet a long time ago and have Adobe Acrobat Pro (Extended). Besides that - this one is clean and reliable - safe to install and works very well with most document types. My only beef- they've gone to bundling a Yahoo toolbar (that you can opt out of) to raise revenue. The one we always use with clients is PDF Creator Pro, which is free and open-source.
And they are aggressive, using nags /pop-ups / pop-unders to get you to install them on your computer. Worse yet - this class of product has been exploited by Malware purveyors - there is a ton of stuff available that you would only want to have installed on your worst competitors' computers -not on yours. Some produce OK output in some situations, useless in others. PDF output with the closest line weights, text, and color format to the original - and file sizes that are usually (not always) roughly the same size as a 'real' Acrobat. and the overall winner of these is Nuance PDF Converter Pro. We have tested every one we could find on a variety of file types including text, CAD, photos, etc. PDF creator/editor products that compete with Acrobat. PDF quality under all circumstances and the absolute minimum file size output - you can get it by paying the big bucks for "real" Acrobat. The best bet is Adobe Acrobat Pro/Premium (whatever they're calling it now). PDF creators, converters, whatever are all over the place. It has been reverse-engineered by everyone else and as such the quality and accuracy of all the various. PDF franchise, it's not an open standard.
